Education Authorities

Common Ground Mediation offers independent mediation services to assist education authorities to meet their legal requirements under the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004/2009. The Acts state that education authorities must make arrangements to provide independent mediation to resolve disagreements between parents of children with additional support needs and the authority and/ or school.

A number of local authorities have signed a Service Level Agreement with Common Ground Mediation. Under the terms of this contract Common Ground Mediation not only provides mediation services, but also offers training in mediation awareness and conflict resolution skills for education authority staff, colleagues from other agencies, and parents.

Other associated pieces of work that we have completed for local authorities recently include:

  • consultation with parents about local implementation of the ASL Act 2004/2009
  • consultation with young people about local implementation of the ASL Act 2004/2009
  • consultation with parents about proposed relocation of education provision
  • facilitation of meetings with parents
  • workplace mediation within school setting
  • mediation between Social Work Department and parents
  • developing peer mediation projects in schools
